IELTS General Writing Task 1 – Declining a Weekend Invitation
Model Answer (Band 8–8.5)
Dear Alex,
Thank you very much for your kind invitation to spend this weekend at your place. I was genuinely excited to hear from you, as it has been far too long since we last caught up properly and relaxed together.
Unfortunately, I have to regretfully decline this time due to an unforeseen commitment at work. My manager has just assigned me an urgent project that must be finalised by Monday morning, and I will need almost the entire weekend to meet the tight deadline responsibly. Under normal circumstances, I would never hesitate to accept your offer, and it truly disappoints me that I cannot join you on this occasion.
Please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. I genuinely appreciate your understanding and patience, and I hope you know that this decision was not made lightly.
Let us reschedule for another weekend very soon, when I can stay longer, switch off from work completely, and give you my full attention.
Best wishes,
Mino
Analytical Review – Strengths, Weaknesses & Improvements
- Appropriate semi-formal tone for a close friend while still sounding polite and respectful.
- Clear justification of the refusal using precise phrases like “unforeseen commitment at work” and “tight deadline responsibly”.
- Well-organised structure: gratitude → reason → apology → future plan.
- Natural, high-level expressions such as “caught up properly,” “decision was not made lightly,” “switch off from work completely”.
- Does not specify an exact future date, which could make the plan sound slightly vague.
- Add a specific time frame, e.g. “later next month,” to make the arrangement more concrete.
- Include one short shared memory to deepen the emotional connection even further.
- regretfully decline → reluctantly turn down, politely refuse
- unforeseen commitment → unexpected obligation, last-minute duty
- tight deadline → demanding schedule, strict timeline
- reschedule for another weekend → arrange an alternative weekend, set up a new date
- switch off from work completely → fully disconnect from work, take a proper break
- Maintain this balance between politeness and natural friendliness throughout all letters.
- Use a mix of idiomatic but clear phrases without becoming too informal.
- Always end with a concrete forward-looking sentence to show strong cohesion.
