Sample Answer (Band 8.0–8.5)
The two maps compare the layout of a small island before and after tourism-related construction. Overall, the island was transformed from a natural environment with minimal infrastructure into a modern tourist resort equipped with accommodation, recreational, and transport facilities.
Before development, the island was mostly covered with forest area in the central part, surrounded by beaches on the southern coast. There was only a small pier for local boats, and no permanent facilities for visitors. The landscape remained largely untouched, reflecting a natural and undeveloped setting.
After construction, the area underwent significant transformation. A large hotel complex and a restaurant were built in the central zone, while a vehicle path now connects them to a reception area near the northern coast. A new pier was added, providing access for ferries and linking the island directly to the mainland. The southern beach has been maintained and designated as a swimming area.
Additionally, a garden was created beside the accommodation zone, improving the island’s visual appeal. Overall, the transformation indicates a shift from a natural forested island to a fully serviced holiday destination designed to support both leisure and accessibility.

Analytical Review – IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 (Test 43, Map: Tourism Island Development)
Overall Verdict
Indicative Band: 8.0 – 8.5
- Task Achievement: Comprehensive coverage of both maps with clear before–after comparison and logical progression.
- Coherence & Cohesion: Strong paragraphing (Before → After → Overall), natural transitions, and cohesive structure.
- Lexical Resource: Excellent topic-specific vocabulary such as “undeveloped,” “transformation,” “recreational,” and “accessible.”
- Grammar: Advanced control of complex clauses, passive structures, and appropriate tense use for describing changes.
Key Weaknesses
- Interpretive depth: Lacks discussion of why development occurred or its possible impacts (economic or environmental).
- Numerical context: No mention of size or scale — could have included estimated area or relative proportions.
- Stylistic rhythm: Some sentences are uniform in structure; variation in rhythm would improve engagement.
- Comparative language: Limited use of explicit contrasts between before/after elements.
Actionable Improvements (High-Impact)
- Add interpretive insight: Mention potential motives or benefits of development (e.g., “to attract more international tourists”).
- Enhance comparison: Use more comparative markers like “in contrast,” “whereas,” or “while previously.”
- Vary sentence structure: Combine short descriptive and complex analytical sentences for smoother flow.
- Add scale references: Use hypothetical but realistic data (“roughly half of the island was developed”).
- Link to purpose: End with an observation connecting changes to tourism growth or sustainability.
